Annual General Meeting: 7 December 2008
The
20th Annual general
Meeting of the Association of Old Mahindians in the United Kingdom
(AOMUK) was held on the 7th of December 2008 at the Lihiniya Restaurant,
66 Cricklewood Broadway, London, NW2 3EP.
The
Joint Secretaries presented Annual
Reports, which described the activities during the last year
and the Treasurer tabled the accounts for the year which has been
audited by the Honorary Auditor. The President in his address
highlighted the events during the year and reiterated the association's
objective to support the alma mater.
A
new Committee of Management
appointed and there was a long and detailed discussion on various
affairs such as the constitution, fund raising and how best to
use the finances etc.
2.
Donation of Computers , Projector and Screen
At
the request of the Mahinda College, 5 Dell computers with the
latest software packages to the value of Rs. 155,000.00 were donated
to the Computer Centre of the College in May 2007. These five
computers together with the computers provided by the AOMUK at
various times in the recent past will help the students of the
college to obtain a good knowledge in Information Technology.
Furthermore
a multi-media projector and a large screen were also provided
at an expense of Rs.150,000.00 in May 2007. These equipments will
be used in the lecture theatres enabling the large number of students
to follow the classes easily even from a distance and hope it
will improve their education.
3.
Donation of Laboratory Equipment for the College
After
communicating with the Principal of Mahinda College in order to
find out the priority needs of the College, a large consignment
of laboratory equipment worth Rs. 300,000.00 was provided to the
college in August 2007.
This consignment consisted of:
(a) Various scientific equipment such as calorie-meters, dissecting
sets, galvanometers, Liebig condensers , microscopes, photometers,
resistance boxes stop clocks, stop watches, and volt meters,
(b) Beakers, burettes, test tubes, human anatomy charts, cylinders,
jars, pipettes, thermometers and U-tubes etc., for day to day
use.

The Annual Dinner dance “Mahinda Nite”
After
n absence of a few years, the main fund raising event of the year,
the “Mahinda Nite”
dinner dance was held on Saturday the 2nd June 2007 at C &
L Country Club, Ruislip, Middlesex. It was a great success attended
by Old Mahindians and well wishers who enjoyed the lively music
of the Band Diversity and danced till the midnight. The AOMUK
thanks Mr Raja Samaraweera, an Old Mahindian, for sponsoring the
band and all other well wishers who made the event successful
and thus helped the AOMUK to raise a considerable amount of funds,
which will be used to improve the education and the facilities
of the students of Mahinda College.
5.
The Founders’ Day alms giving
The annual Founders’
Day alms giving was held on 16th September at London Buddhist
Vihara in Chiswick under the auspices of the new chief incumbent
of the Vihara, Venerable Bogoda Seelawimala Thero. A large contingent
of Old Mahindians, their families and well wishers gathered on
this occasion, alms were offered with Ata Pirikara and the merits
were offered to the founders including Colonel Olcott and Mr Woodward,
all other tutorial and administrative staff and well wishers who
have helped the development of Mahinda College.
The sermons were given by both by Ven Bellanwila Dhammaratana
thero, the chief incumbent of the Bellanwila Temple, Dehiwala,
who was visiting the UK at the time and Ven Bogoda Seelawimala
thero.
6.
Participation at the Festival of Cricket
Our
Association has been particpating in the Festivel
of Cricket for a number years, winning the Champions Trophy
twice in the recent part. In the 2007 tournament, Mahinda team
was successful in the first match, winning against the Old Rihmondites
but was defeated at the next match. AOMUK thanks the cricket team
for the sportamanship shown and hope and wish success next year.

Annual General Meeting: 3rd of December 2006
The
18th Annual General Meeting of the AOMUK was held on Sunday the
3rd of December 2006 at the Lihiniya Restaurant in London under
the presidency of Dr C H L Abayasiriwardane. A large gathering
of Old Mahindians were present with their families and well wishers.
For the Old Mahindians, it was a time to reminisce the past and
their younger days at the College and also to catch up with the
latest news of the College.
The

audited by the Honorary Auditor. The President in his address
highlighted the events during the year and reiterated the association's
objective to support the alma mater. He informed the gathering
that during the last year the Association had better communication
with the College, identified the priorities of the requirements
of the College and have started a large project on supplying equipment
to Sports, Computer and Science departments. Dr Abayasiriwardane
thanked all who supported the AOMUK activities during the year
but specially mentioning the wives of the Committee members who
have contributed much to the benefit of the association. A few
individuals who deserved special thanks were mentioned by names.
After
the AGM, it was time to relax and to meet old friends and families.
Everybody enjoyed a delicious Sri Lankan lunch sponsored by Mr
Hasitha Dissanayake (Director, IMPEX Consultants), a Committee
Member. The AOMUK thanks Mr. Dissanayake for this generous gesture.
